329 student musicians now perform with one of ISO’s nine ensembles! This is a record number in our 41-year history. The most growth has been in the entry-level orchestras. In fact, there are so many students in these groups, that they can no longer fit together on the stage at Symphony Space. Instead, Queens East and Trinity Florentine Orchestras will perform together and Turtle Bay and Morningside Orchestras will pair up for the May performance.

Not surprisingly, the other record we just set is in the amount of financial aid awarded: $108,000 this season alone. Please consider making a donation. It’s only by everyone pulling together that we are able to include every child who wants to make music with us!

“What can I do to make the ISO experience more valuable and enjoyable for every student?” That’s the question all of us at ISO ask ourselves every day. This season, we answered that question with the founding of new ensembles (Queens East Orchestra and ISO Flutes), resumed a regular schedule of tours (Symphonic Band to D.C. in February), and made admission to the winter concerts free.

We want all of our students to have unequaled opportunities to make music together. And just as importantly, we must make sure that all children who come to us can participate, regardless of their families’ financial situation.

Tuition fees cover only two-thirds of the actual cost of providing our programs for each child, so every one of our 310 students receives a critical subsidy. But half of our students cannot afford the tuition fees, so we provide scholarships and need-based financial aid to more than 150 of them.

Please help us keep ISO’s programs available to every child who comes to us by making a contribution today. You’ll also be keeping dreams alive for these talented young musicians.

Waddy Thompson, Executive Director

At each meeting, a Parent Representative will be chosen. This person will coordinate extra-musical activities for the ensemble (including weekly snack time in some cases), contact other parents for volunteer jobs, and take part in a new Parent’s Council. The Council will help ISO staff better understand issues families encounter with participation with ISO and plan joint activities for all ensembles.

Check your most recent issue of the parents’email newsletter Subito for time and place for your meeting. Not receiving Subito? Call the ISO office to be added to the email list.

ISO’s 2011/2012 season was remarkable in many ways. Enrollment surpassed 300. In fact, there were 54% more students enrolled than just two years ago. The sold-out Carnegie Hall concert will remain a highlight in all our memories for many years. And the ISO experience was enhanced by coachings from professional orchestra musicians from the New York Philharmonic, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, and New York Pops Orchestra and masterclasses from principal players from the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Shanghai String Quartet, and the American Brass Quintet.

Next season holds the promise of more exciting experiences for ISO students with special coachings, a workshop with the London Philharmonic, and a tour for the Symphonic Band.

More than two-thirds of this year’s students have already auditioned for next season. Other students wishing to join an ISO ensemble will be able to audition in September. Call the ISO office for information.
