COLORADO

Rocky Ridge Music Center

Age Range: Ages 10-15 (Junior Student Seminar); Ages 15-24 (Young Artist Seminar)

Rocky Ridge Music Center is located in the Rocky Mountains.  Junior Student Seminar (JSS) and Young Artist Seminar (YAS) students receive two private lessons per week on their primary instrument and an optional 30-minute lesson per week on their secondary instrument.  Advanced students can audition in the concerto competition for an opportunity to perform with the orchestra.

JSS students have the opportunity to develop their musicianship through composition, chamber music, studio classes, string techniques class, wind ensemble, orchestra, choir and performance class. YAS studies include chamber music, orchestra, studio/performance classes, recitals, history lecture series, and master classes.  An audition is only required for the Honors Program and Composition Program in JSS, and required for all YAS student.

MICHIGAN

Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp

Age Range:  Grades 5-12

Students who attend Blue Lake choose a major and a minor.  Majors offered are band, orchestra, art, jazz, piano, harp, choir, composition, art, dance, or theater.  28 Minor courses are offered in art, drama, dance, or music including “try a new instrument,” conducting, music theory, world music, radio broadcasting, and more. Organized recreation, practice time, recitals, master classes, evening activities, and regular attendance at performances complete the camp experience.  No audition required.

Interlochen Arts Camp

Location:  Interlochen, MI
Age Range:  8-18 years old
Dates:  Various sessions – 1 week to 8 weeks

Interlochen is one of the world’s premier summer arts programs.  The program includes over 2,500 students who come for intensive study in music, dance, theater, creative writing, visual arts, and motion picture arts.  In the music program campers live and learn in divisions by age level: high school division (grades 9-12), intermediate division (grades 6-9), and junior division (grades 3-6).  Music students participate in a major ensemble, chamber music, master classes, electives, and weekly private lessons (varies by division).  The camp is situated between two lakes and many outdoor recreational activites are available.  Recorded audition required by some programs.

NORTH CAROLINA

Brevard Music Center

Brevard Music Center has 400 students, from nearly every state in the U.S. and from several other countries enroll each year. All students and an artist faculty of sixty live and work on the Music Center campus, 180 wooded acres in the mountains of western North Carolina.  Recorded audition required.

All High School students:

  • receive weekly private lessons from Brevard’s artist faculty
  • may perform solo and chamber music in Brevard’s weekly student recitals
  • take classes in music theory and literature
  • orchestral students can participate in the concerto competition

Eastern Music Festival

Dates:  June 22-July 27, 2013

EMF showcases two student orchestras of equal ability with regularly rotated seating, each rehearsing six times a week. Both orchestras perform with faculty soloists, visiting artists, and the winners of the concerto competition.

Students in the orchestral program have the opportunity to attend classes and seminars  on topics that may include music theory, music history, efficient movement of the body while playing your instrument, breath management (for brass and woodwinds), how to create a career in music performance, and more.  Weekly classes are also available in Alexander Technique.  Recreational and social activities are planned on a regular basis, both on and off campus.  Recorded audition required.

OHIO

Baldwin Wallace Summer Music Programs

Varying by camp students participate in large ensembles, sectionals, chamber music, private lessons, music theory and history classes, and much more.  String, Piano, and Band Camp do not require an audition.  The Summer Music Institute requires a recorded audition.  Check out the website for more specific details on each camp.

Credo Chamber Music

Credo is an intensive program of music study and performance held at the Oberlin Conservatory.  Students engage in musical growth through chamber groups, master classes, large ensembles, and private lessons.  Credo students receive extensive daily coaching and mentoring with faculty.  Students are placed in chamber music and residential environments on a basis of musical achievement and social development (age).  Recorded or live audition required.

Friends Music Camp

Friends Music Camp is a Quaker camp where enrollment is open to young people of any race or religion who have had at least one year of lessons on their chosen instrument. The number of Quaker campers has ranged from 50-85%. During the week, campers attend lessons, sing in the chorus, play in large and small ensembles, act in musical theater, take classes, and, of course, have ample time for hanging out and having fun. Evening activities include capture the flag, a dance, outside speakers, visits to the local pool, and other fun activities.  No audition required.

TENNESSEE

Sewanee Summer Music Festival

At Sewanee every student in the orchestral program is placed in one of two orchestras which rehearse daily and perform weekly concerts.  Students are also placed in a chamber music group each week including daily coachings with a faculty member.  There are weekly private lessons and time for individual private practice, as well as a list of elective courses to choose from, including composition, conducting, music theory, audition preparation, and career possibilities in a changing musical landscape.  One day a week is set aside for free time and optional outdoor activities.  Recorded or live audition required.

CANADA

Music at Port Milford

Music at Port Milford offers a four week intensive chamber music experience for serious string players and pianists. Students work together to produce weekly performances of chamber, orchestral and choral works. Students partcipate in an assigned chamber music group, orchestra, the all-camp choir, private lessons, coachings with the Quartet-Ensembles-in-Residence, and recreational activities. An audition CD is required.
