MAINE

Bar Harbor Brass Week

Bar Harbor Brass Week is an intensive educational and performance experience for select college and high school brass musicians. A small group of high school and college/pre-professional participants are selected to form brass choirs and chamber ensembles to prepare for performances in Bar Harbor.  Daily activities include rehearsals, coachings, master classes, and private lessons–all led by a prestigious faculty of many of the finest brass musicians and educators in the country.

All of this takes place on the campus of the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine.  Bar Harbor is one of the East Coast’s most popular summer tourist destinations and lies adjacent to Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island.  Recorded audition is required.

Camp Encore/Coda

Age Range:  Completed grades 3-11
Dates:  First session: Wednesday, June 26 to Sunday, July 21, 2013 (3 1/2 weeks)
Second session: Sunday, July 21 to Sunday, August 11, 2013 (3 weeks)
Full season: Wednesday, June 26 to Sunday, August 11, 2013 (6 1/2 weeks)
Instruments:  String, Woodwind, Brass, Percussion, and Voice

Each camper receives 1½ hours of private lesson time each week, on either one or two instruments/voice, and may participate in various ensembles and classes. This actively allows them to pursue two instruments that they are already in before camp, or start a new second instrument at camp.

Large ensembles include orchestras, wind ensembles, jazz bands, and vocal groups. Small ensembles include chamber music, jazz combos, and rock bands. Music classes include theory, ear training, history, literature, conducting, arranging and composition.  Campers also participate in traditional camp activities; sports, arts and crafts, waterfront, etc.  No audition required.

New England Music Camp

Instruments:  String, Woodwind, Brass, Percussion, and Voice

The NEMC core program allows each camper to design a schedule that meets their needs and interests. Students receive two private lessons each week and ample time for practice. A broad selection of classes are offered ranging from music theory and composition to jazz appreciation and improvisation. Students can also learn a new instrument in addition to their major instrument.  All students participate in a major performing ensemble, which include two levels of orchestra, band, choir, and jazz ensemble.  Recorded playing sample required for new students.

MASSACHUSETTS

Tanglewood Institute

The Boston University Tanglewood Institute (BUTI) is recognized internationally as one of the premiere summer training program for aspiring high school-age musicians. Under the guidance of professional conductors, artists/teachers, and Boston Symphony Orchestra members, students experience high-quality training through the intensive study and performance of orchestral , chamber music, and solo repertoire (varies by program).

BUTI offers the following programs:  Young Artists Orchestra, Vocal Program, Wind Ensemble, Piano Program, Composition Program, Harp Program, and Two-Week Workshops on individual orchestral instruments and string quartet.  Live or recorded audition required.

PENNSYLVANIA

Philadelphia International Music Festival

The Philadelphia International Music Festival is a summer music program for music students from 8-18 years old and all skill levels on the campus on Bryn Mawr College. Festival highlights include private lessons, daily orchestra rehearsals, daily music education courses, optional daily chamber music rehearsals, solo performance and competition opportunities, daily private practice time, faculty recitals and master classes featuring principal players and other members of The Philadelphia Orchestra, and much more.  Audition is not required for acceptance, after acceptance a recording for placement purposes is required.

VERMONT

Kinhaven

Age Range:  4th grade through 12th grade
Dates:  Junior Session – August 11-25, 2013
Senior Session – June 28-August 10, 2013

Kinhaven offers a two-week Junior Session (4th-7th grade) and a six-week Senior Session (Age 13-18).  Students are assigned to a chamber group and faculty coach each week and receive daily coachings.  Students also participate in large ensembles each week including full orchestra, string orchestra, woodwind ensemble, and brass ensembles.  Assignments in the full orchestra rotate weekly.  Each student receives at least one private lesson per week.  There are also three master classes given by world-class musicians during the summer.  Recorded audition required.

Lyra Summer Music Workshop

Age Range:  All ages and ability levels
Dates:  July 14-August 3, 2013
Instruments: String and Piano

All students receive daily lessons, participate in chamber ensembles, and group classes in music theory, ear-training, music history and literature, improvisation, composition, rhythm, and performance class.  Students also get to participate in master class and concerts with guest artists, recreational and social activities, and regional excursions.  The camp is held on the campus of Vermont Technical College.  New students must submit a recording for ensemble group placement.

Point CounterPoint

Point CounterPoint is a chamber music camp that offers 1, 2, 3, and 5-week
sessions.  The one-week Prelude session is designed for string players from
age 8-13 to introduce chamber music and accepts a range of ability levels;
no audition is required for the Prelude session.  The longer Point
CounterPoint sessions are geared towards students age 11-17 and require an audition.  Students are placed into two chamber music groups and rehearse in both coached and independent settings.  Students also receive private lessons, music theory and history lessons, and have ample private practice time. There is a final concert performance.  Music faculty are
professionals from all over the country, and their bios are listed on the
website.

Point CounterPoint offers typical camp activities in the afternoon to
balance the serious chamber music program.  Situated on a lake, and beneath the Green Mountains, chamber music has been performed here since 1963.
