Summer Interlude at the Brearley School

Dates: 6/17-6/28/13; 8:30am – 12:00pm (Instrumental) and 1:00-3:00pm (Choral)
Age range: Students grade 3-12
Instruments accepted: Woodwind, Brass, Piano, Strings, and Voice
Students can choose to participate in the instrumental program, choral program, or both programs. Classes offered include orchestra, rhythmic wake-up call, jazz ensemble, chamber music, and musical theater workshop. Program culminates in a concert on the final day.
Summer Chamber Music with the Chamber Music Center of New York
Location: Bloomingdale School of Music, 323 West 108th Street, New York, NY
Dates: 7/1-7/3 & 7/8-7/12/13 (No classes 7/4-7/7); 9:30am – 5:00pm
Age range: 8-18 years old

Chamber Music Center collaborates with Bloomingdale School of Music for an unforgettable summer chamber music experience. Each day students will receive daily coachings, guided practice, workshops, masterclasses, as well as outdoor activities. This two-week immersion will culminate in a concert of all students. Groups will be expertly formed and coached by highly qualified and experienced faculty. Pre-formed groups (trios or more) are encouraged to apply.
Third Street Music School Settlement: Chamber Music Workshop
Location: 235 East 11th St, New York, NY
Dates: 7/1-7/13/13; Monday through Friday 9:30am – 5:00pm
Age range: 8-18 years old
Instruments accepted: Woodwind, Brass, Piano, and Strings
Students in the workshop take part in daily coaching, rehearsals, field trips, master classes, and student concerts.
Third Street Music School Settlement: Summer Prelude Band

Dates: 7/2-8/1/13 Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5-6PM
Age range: 9 years old and up

For students who have played their instrument from 6 months up to 3 years.
Turtle Bay Music School Summer Camps
Location: 244 East 52nd Street, New York, NY
Dates: Two sessions – 6/10-6/27/13 and 7/3-7/25/13
Beginner Camps include violin, piano, guitar and voice for children from ages 3-10. Classes include instruction in the chosen instrument, music theory, music history, and Tuneful Sequence.
Intermediate and Advanced Camps include violin, piano, guitar, voice and chamber ensemble camps for children from ages 5-16. Classes include instruction in the chosen instrument or rehearsal with a chamber music group, yoga, fiddling, Orff ensemble, composition, masterclasses, ear training, and interpretation.
Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts
Location: Long Island – Wheatley Heights, New York (daily bus transportation provided from boroughs of New York City, Suffolk & Nassau County, parts of Long Island, and parts of Connecticut – see website for details)
Dates: 3-week session (7/22-8/9/13), 4-week session (6/24-7/19/13) and 7-week session (6/24-8/9/13), weekdays
Age range: 4th-12th grade (completed)

Usdan is an arts day camp in Long Island where students have classes in a major and minor interest each day as well as swimming, and daily assemblies. Music major classes offered are band, orchestra, jazz ensembles, chorus, piano, and guitar. Major and minor interest classes are also offered in art, theater, dance, chess, writing, nature, athletics, and discovery. Scholarships, financial aid, and internships are available. No audition required.
Resident Camps in New York State
Crane Youth Music
Location: SUNY Potsdam, Potsdam, New York
Age range: 12-18 years old
Instruments accepted: String, woodwind, brass, percussion, and piano
CYM staff includes Crane School of Music faculty supplemented by additional guest artists/teachers. All students attend master classes taught by master teachers, perform in large group ensembles, and have the opportunity to receive training in music theory and aural skills. String performers participate in string sectionals and chamber music groups in addition to orchestra. Pianists receive individual lessons, coaching, and group piano instruction in the electronic piano labs. Vocalists perform in a variety of choral ensembles and work in small class lessons as well as master classes. Woodwind, brass and percussion instrumentalists rehearse with a band twice daily and also perform in like instrument ensembles. All students have the opportunity to perform in the all-camp choir.
Eastern U.S. Music Camp
Location: Colgate University, Hamilton, New York
Dates: 6/30-7/27/13; 2, 3, and 4-week sessions
Age range: 10-18 years old
Instruments accepted: String, woodwind, brass, percussion, piano, guitar, and voice
This program offers young people the opportunity to pursue musical studies through individual, class, and group instruction; to perform a wide range of instrumental and choral works in ensemble and concert (both classical and jazz); and to participate in supervised sports and other informal recreational activities. Private lessons are available. Students also have the opportunity to take classes in theory, harmony, composition and arranging, conducting, and improvisation.
French Woods Festival of the Performing Arts
Location: Hancock, New York
Dates: 4 three-week sessions; students can attend one session or any combination up to all 4
Age range: 7-17 years old
Instruments accepted: String, woodwind, brass, percussion, piano, and guitar
Students are placed in classical or jazz ensembles based on their age, ability, and schedule. Students audition when they arrive at camp for placement. Private and group lessons are available for all instruments. Students in the Music Camp also have the opportunity to play in a pit orchestra in conjunction with the Theater Camp. Campers can participate in activities in music, art, film and video, theater, dance, circus, sports, cooking, magic, horseback riding, and more.
Ithaca College Summer Music Academy
Location: Ithaca College, Ithaca, NY
Dates: Intermediate Session – July 28-August 3, 2013
High School Session – July 14-27, 2013
Age range: Entering Grades 5-9 (Intermediate) & Grades 10-12 (High School Division)
Instruments: String, Woodwind, Brass, Percussion, Guitar, Voice
Students in both the intermediate and high school division participate in large ensembles, chamber ensembles, master classes, and an array of music and non-music courses. Held on the Ithaca College campus, the Summer Music Academy has a faculty that consists of renowned guest artists, top music educators, and Ithaca College faculty. An array of music electives are available designed for specific music interests: performance, music education, sound recording technology, composition, and jazz. No audition required.
Luzerne Music Center
Location: Lake Luzerne, NY
Age Range: 11-14 years old (Junior Session); 15-18 years old (Senior Session)
Date: Junior Session 6/23-7/19/13 (2 or 4-Week Sessions); Senior Session 7/22-8/18/13 (4-Week Session)
Luzerne Music Center (LMC) is a summer camp and performing arts center located in the New York Adirondacks. LMC maintains special relationships with the Philadelphia Orchestra and New York City Ballet. Junior Session students travel to performances of the New York City Ballet, while Senior Session students attend weekly performances of the Philadelphia Orchestra, all held at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. Philadelphia Orchestra members and visiting performing artists present master classes and sectionals for all instruments on campus throughout the summer. At LMC, students perform in a variety of large and small ensembles all while receiving weekly private lessons. Live or recorded audition required.
Meadowmount School of Music
Location: Westport, NY
Age Range: 9-30 years old
Instruments: String and Piano
Founded in 1944 by Ivan Galamian, the Meadowmount School of Music, located in the Adirondack Mountains, offers exceptional string players and pianists a seven-week intensive program of private study and chamber music coaching with internationally recognized faculty. Performance opportunities include weekly master classes with the Meadowmount faculty, master classes with visiting artists, and concerts both on and off campus. Audition DVD required.
New York Summer Music Festival (NYSMF)
Location: Oneonta, New York
Age Range: 11 – 25
Dates: Three sessions; June 23 – August 3, 2013

The New York Summer Music Festival (NYSMF) is a summer music camp, hosted by the Music Department of The State University of New York/College at Oneonta. NYSMF is a six-week summer program where each day is filled with music ensemble rehearsals, chamber music, and music electives. Students can choose from over 50 performing ensembles and classes. No audition required.
Signature Music Camp at Cazenovia College
Location: Cazenovia, NY
Age Range: Entering grades 8-12
Instruments: Woodwind, Brass, Percussion, and Voice
Band/Choir Track – This is the larger program of the Signature Music Camp. Campers participate in daily band and choir rehearsals. Other class offerings include show choir, jazz ensembles, improvisation, sight-singing, master classes and music theory. From 8 a.m. until 3 p.m., campers take part in ensembles and classes. In the late afternoon, from 3-5 p.m., campers can swim, play frisbee or other pick-up games, or just hang out on the lawn. Evening events include skit night, staff and camper recitals, scavenger hunts, and carnival night. No audition required.
Summit Music Festival
Location: Purchase, NY
Age Range: 14 years of age and over; students under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or have a guardian designated for them by their parent while they are at the festival
Dates: 7/21-8/11/13; one, two, and three week sessions
Instruments: String, Woodwind, Piano, and Voice
Programs offered include individual instrumental study, chamber music, Aaron Rosand Intensive Violin Study Program, and more. Students have the opportunity to participate in private lessons, master classes, recitals, special lectures, orchestra, and more varying by program. The three-week festival brings together an international faculty of the highest caliber. An audition CD is required for all applicants.

Rutgers Summer Band and Orchestra Camp
Location: Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick, NJ
Age Range: 13-18 years old
Instruments: String, Woodwind, Brass, and Percussion
Experience a week of intense orchestra and band training with Mason Gross School of the Arts faculty members, renowned professional musicians, and leading music educators from the New York-New Jersey area. Students participate in daily large-ensemble and chamber-ensemble rehearsals, group lessons, clinics, master classes, broad-ranging elective courses, faculty recitals, and recreational/social activities. Students share newly developed performance skills during the final Gala Concert at the Nicholas Music Center.
